Bangladesh: Are the ghosts of 2006 coming back? Not a chance

Once again Bangladesh is back in the medieval era, at least in thewords of two former prime ministers who were more like queen orprincess than people's representatives. They were more likedictators than any democratic leaders. The funny thing is that theynever deny it. They may argue differently about their tenure asprime minister. But there can not exist any argument about theirposition in there party. As a chairperson or president of theirparties, they are dictator by the parties' constitution. Theycaptured those positions for more than a quarter-century.....MORE

Bangladesh: ´Minus´ formula never works

The Minus 2 Formula was intended to abolish these dynasties and inthe process split up the BNP and Awami League parties so that thesedivided parties would care more about the contributors rather thanthe ideological figureheads their biological successors. As a result Tarique Rahman (son of Khaleda Zia) is now in jail while BNP iseffectively fractured and is continuing without him. Due to waning popularity in the party (as a result of Sheikh Hasin'aarrest), Sajeeb Wazed (son of Sheikh Hasina) opts to stay in the USand lead a 'worldwide revolution', while Awami League members arere structuring without his input......MORE

Bangladesh: A rush to the election, but then what?

Now what is the point of election if all you do is reject theresults? Who needs a parliament, if the opposition would remainabsent most of the times? This has been happening for last 15 yearsby both big parties. When Ershad's government fell in 1990 after along public unrest, a care taker government was set up to hold afree and fare election. Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) won theelection and formed the government. Khaleda Zia, wife of latepresident Ziaur Rahman, became the first female prime minister incountry's history. Awami League (AL) became the main oppositionparty lead by Sheikh Hasina, daughter of late President SheikhMujibur Rahman. Hasina claimed irregularity in the election andrejected the results, but soon decided to play along and attendedthe parliament. In inauguration, she declared that she would not letthe government to be in peace for a single day. She kept her promiseand called strikes for hundreds of days. BNP officials told us abouthow the country is loosing millions of dollars in every workless dayof strike.....MORE

Government Unlikely to Succumb to Political Pressure

One thing is certain. The government enjoys the support of the bigcountries including USA and UK and the donor agencies to its anti-corruption measures and the election roadmap as well. ForeignMissions had witnessed the bitter rivalry of Awami League and BNPduring the last 15 years and long boycott of parliament by theopposition on flimsy grounds. They were convinced that democracycould not function in Bangladesh without a change in the leadershipof the two major parties who had never been in talking terms even ingrave national crisis. Even the Commonwealth had intervened butfailed to end their bitter rivalry. In politics, no word is final. Sources in Awami League and BNP thatare riddled with factionalism indicated that they might ultimatelytake part in the election. December is far away........MORE

American policy toward Bangladesh

With regard to denial of space for terrorism, Bangladesh shares itsdeep concerns with America. Bangladesh condemns the targeted killingof civilians and terrorist violence, in all its forms and manifestations anywhere in the world.Bangladesh sternly took action against Islamic militants within thecountry, and the care-taker government has adopted zero tolerancetowards terrorists. Laws have been enacted to prevent moneytransfers from abroad, and terrorism has been widely defined. In this connection, one must consider the causes of terrorism.Although there is no uniform view on the causes, there is no disputethat deprivations often lead people to militancy.....MORE

INDIA

A possible war between India and Bangladesh

India will wait and see what Bangladesh military junta will do. It may be necessary for Indian Army to flush out these terrorists and cleans the country to eliminate terrorists bases. India's concern over infiltration from Bangladesh side came in the wake of intelligence inputs that the banned Harkat-ul-Jehad-e-Islami (HuJI), operating from Bangladesh, could be behind the serial blasts that rocked the tourist city on May 13.....

Darool -Uloom Deoband issues fatwa against terrorism

The organisation, which condemned terrorism as the "most inhuman crime" has a reputation as one of the global centres of Islamic theological debate. Its base in the northern Indian town of Deoband has become synonymous with dogmatic and violent fundamentalism.
Most of the Taleban leadership attended Deobandi-influenced seminaries based in Pakistan. The movement has been recognised by analysts as a key force behind jihadi madrassas — traditional schools that promote terrorist violence — in several countries, including the UK.
"The religion of Islam has come to wipe out all kinds of terrorism and to spread the message of global peace," the Darul-Uloom grand mufti Habibur Rehman said in the fatwa.....

Intell: Need Local Intelligence Network, Not Federal Crime

It is not as if the Central agencies have covered themselves withglory in the past month. Pakistan has resumed cross-border terrorismby providing covering fire and logistical support to the terroristsfor infiltration across the international border as well as the Lineof Control. In the recent incident in the Samba sector when morethan a thousand rounds of gunfire were counted and it was claimedthat an infiltration attempt had been thwarted, the actual fact wasthat several terrorists did manage to infiltrate into India when thePakistan Rangers kept the Indian Border Security Force pinned downwith gunfire. The terrorists were able to head into inhabited areasand pick out a political leader for assassination and then verynearly succeeded in reaching a local cantonment where Army familieswere stationed in a repeat of the slaughter that happened atKaluchak some years ago......MORE

RAW and MOSSAD: The secret link

RAW-Mossad relations were a secret till Morarji Desai became prime minister in 1977. RAW officials had alerted him about the Zia-ul Haq regime's plans to acquire nuclear capability. While French assistance to Pakistan for a plutonium reprocessing plant was well known, the uranium enrichment plant at Kahuta was a secret. After the French stopped helping Islamabad under pressure from the Carter administration, Pakistan was determined to keep the Kahuta plant a secret. Islamabad did not want Washington to prevent its commissioning. RAW agents were shocked when Desai called Zia and told the Pakistani military dictator: 'General, I know what you are up to in Kahuta. RAW has got me all the details.' The prime minister's indiscretion threatened to expose RAW sources......MORE
